Tokyo Islands – Shikinejima Part 3
Tomari Beach. This unforgettable scene is on the Shikinejima Island. It was also impressive to see the smiles of the island people who showed us this beach, the smiles told us how much they love their island.
The friendly people living on the island love their relaxing lifestyle, giving you a cozy and warm feeling. It is not only the scenic beauty and wild hot springs created by nature of the Islands that will inspire you, but the islands still retain the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the good-old days of Japan. A rare glimpse of the real Japan.
Shikinejima Information
Weather
Shikinejima and Niijima Islands are called “Island of perpetual spring". While the islands are surrounded by the warm Kuroshio current, the temperature does change throughout the year: 17.5 C on average, approx. 8 C at the lowest (in winter), approx. 26 C at the highest (in summer). It is windy in winter, and will give you a chill.
Hot to get there
To go to the Tokyo Islands, take boats operated by Tokai Kisen. The most popular way is to take a high-speed jet-boat from Takeshiba Terminal at Tokyo Bay. See here to find more info
Information Center
There is a tourist office near the Nobushi Port, the port you first arrive by boat. In case you haven’t booked accommodation, you can ask to find a room. You can also buy boat tickets for going back.
Accommodations
Accommodations available in Shikinejima are mostly Small Ryokan(Japanese Inns) or Minshuku (Pensions), rooms in the traditional Japanese style of accommodations. You can not expect very modern facilities, but they are comfortable, neat and tidy. Room rates of pensions are lower than hotels in cities. Amenities like toothbrush or towels might not be provided, so you need to bring your own. Rooms of pensions usually come with breakfast and dinner service. (It depends on the pension you stay. Make sure when booking.) There are 39 pensions and small Ryokans in Shikinejima.
Food
Needless to say, you can enjoy real fresh seafood. Japanese cuisine like Shima-zushi (Sushi) Sashimi, and Templa of fish or Ashitaba Herb are specialties there. Not only traditional Japanese food are available, you can also enjoy other types of cuisine like Italian food or Ramen. An Izakaya (dining bar) is also available.
