Mount
Fuji Area | Tokyo Surroundings
Mount Fuji an Introduction
Mount Fuji (3776 meters) is Japan's highest mountain. Visible from Tokyo on a
clear day, the mountain is located to the west of Tokyo on the main island Honshu.
A perfectly symmetrical volcanic cone, the mountain is a near-mythical national
symbol immortalized in countless works of art, including Hokusai's 36 Views of
Mt. Fuji. The official climbing season lasts for only two months, from July to
August. Even during these months, when Tokyo often swelters in 40-degree heat,
temperatures at the top can be below freezing at night and climbers
must dress adequately.
A Warning
Climbing outside the official season is not only technically illegal without
police permission but extremely dangerous without alpine climbing experience
and equipment. Nearly all facilities are closed in the off season. The weather,
unpredictable any time of year, is downright vicious in the winter and there
are cases of people being literally blown off the mountain by high winds.
The majestic appearance of Mount Fuji has always fascinated travelers for centuries.
Mount Fuji is also an active volcano.
Fuji Five Lakes - Fujigoko
At the northern foot of Mount Fuji, there are 5 large lakes, called Yamanakako,
Saiko, Shojiko, Motosuko and Kawaguchiko. The area is called Fujigoko (Fuji
5 Lakes) and Kawaguchiko or Lake Kawaguchi is the most developed lake resort
in the area. It is also the most accessible area with convenient train and bus
transportation, to and around, the Fujigoko area. Click here for a map of the Fuji
Five Lake area.
In the Fujigoko area, there are many attractions. You can enjoy
Onsen, or Hot Springs, provided by the volcanic activity of Mt. Fuji.
It is said that Mt. Fuji and the Onsen Hot Springs are the best attraction in
Japan, it is needless to say, why Fujigoko area is a very popular tourist destination
in Japan.
