Eating & Dining in Japan

Eating and drinking in Japanese style

Tokyo has an incredible variety of eating and drinking establishments totalling almost 200,000 restaurants and bars catering to a region(Kanto) that homes almost 20 million people. Any comprehensive Tokyo restaurant guide would be out of date before it was complied and published. So, we can only provide a humble introduction. In Tokyo you can experience the finest, first class (two, three and four star) restaurants in the world. And then there are the truly traditional Japanese dining experiences:

Ryotei, the very formal, traditional Japanese cultural dining experience. Also, look for the countless Izakaya, the informal Japanese pub style of eating, highly recommended!

And then there is the overwhelming amount of fast food joints, both Western and Japanese. No trip to Japan should overlook experiencing Japanese deluxe-convenience stores: the Konbini eating experience, where you can buy almost anything from these stores and they are open 24 hours day -not your regular western 7-Eleven store!

Almost all daily life in the city of Tokyo revolves around the train and subway stations! Therefore check out the eating establishments in, directly outside or near a train or subway Station - we also recommend the street style Yatai eating stalls. And do not forget to visit the large department store's food courts, usually in the basement of the building, called Depato.

Last, but not least, you have to experience Kaiten Sushi - the original Japanese conveyor belt dining experience, along with the Vending Machine eating experience - there are 1000's of vending machines in Tokyo and some vending machines could provide soup to dessert. Have a stand-up picnic on a street corner in Tokyo :-) Enjoy!

In our eating and drinking section called Dining in Tokyo we have created a directory listing of dining establishments in Tokyo(coming soon). In each listing we provide an introduction, list all contact details, include photos of the restaurant and a few of their dishes. Also included is a street map with directions which use the nearest train/subway station as a point of reference.

To help you express and communicate your order at a restaurant or when buying food at a market or shop we have included Japanese Travel Phrases for Dining in Tokyo.
